Hopkinsville FFA Chapter member Madelin Macario is approaching the idea of ice cream carts with a unique cultural perspective.
Her business, Sabores de Mi Terra, which means Flavors of My Land, serves Guatemalan ice cream from a colorful push cart, much like the vendor carts which are seen in countries like Guatemala.
Macario is preparing to present her business idea at the upcoming Kentucky FFA Convention as a finalist in the Shark Tank Grant competition.
If she wins, Macario will use the funds towards ingredients, permits, branding, and other necessities for her business. Currently, her product is sold at a local ice cream shop, but she wants to separate from this to embrace her Guatemalan culture.
The reason for this serves in the difference between the style of ice cream in Guatemala versus Mexico. Guatemalan ice cream features fresh fruit and less added sugars, while Mexican ice cream has substantially more sugar and sweetness to it.
Macario plans to feature her business at local festivals, agriculture events, and other opportunities following her presentation at the FFA convention.
