FFA students don’t slow down when summer arrives. Many spend their break completing Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) projects, putting classroom lessons into practice in real-world settings.
YourAgEdge invited local agriculture advisers to nominate two students for an SAE spotlight series. Today’s feature highlights a standout from Trigg County FFA: Brooke Humphries
For Brooke Humphries, a senior with Trigg County FFA, her Supervised Agricultural Experience keeps her outdoors and hands-on with both mowing and gardening.
“I do love to be outdoors,” Humphries said.
She works at River Bend Farms, where her family has been involved for years. Each week, she and her sister spend around seven hours mowing the property. Beyond mowing, she also helps in the Trigg County greenhouse and manages her own garden. This year, she introduced potatoes to her project, harvesting about 250 pounds. She also grows okra, squash, zucchini, peppers, and tomatoes.
Introduced to FFA as a sophomore, she has since grown more involved and looks forward to competing more during her senior year. She is currently co-oping in the Trigg greenhouse. This will be the first year the greenhouse will be growing mums. Humphries learned how to fertilize and properly care for the plant so she can take on that roll this fall. Throughout the season she will be caring for the flowers by watering, fertilizing, and maintaining them.
Humphries’ SAE highlights the variety of opportunities FFA offers, blending crop production, greenhouse management, and community involvement into one meaningful project.
